1. Exploring Funchal

Funchal, the vibrant capital of Madeira, is compact and easy to explore on foot, by bus, or taxi. Here are the main options:

1.1 Walking

Many attractions, including the Old Town, marina, and markets, are within walking distance from the conference venue. Funchal’s pedestrian-friendly streets allow you to enjoy the city’s charm and iconic landmarks. Madeira’s terrain can involve significant elevation changes. Plan accordingly if you’re walking or cycling.

1.2 Public Buses

Funchal has a well-organized bus network operated by SIGA. Buses are an affordable way to explore neighborhoods like Monte, where the iconic Tropical Garden is located, or travel to the nearby Lido area for its promenade. For frequent travel within Funchal, consider purchasing a pre-loaded SIGA card for convenience.

1.3 Taxis and Ride-Hailing Apps

Taxis are readily available in Funchal and operate on a metered system. Alternatively, ride-hailing apps like Bolt provide a convenient way to get around. Bolt and Uber are the most popular ride-hailing apps.

1.4 Cable Car

For a unique perspective of the city, take the cable car from Funchal to Monte. Enjoy breathtaking views as you ascend to the hillside.

2. Exploring Beyond Funchal

Madeira's rugged landscape and stunning natural beauty make it worth exploring beyond the capital. Here’s how to get around the island:

2.1 Rental Cars

Renting a car is the best way to explore Madeira at your own pace. Some remote areas of Madeira are not easily accessible by public transport. Renting a car or booking a tour is ideal for these locations. Driving allows you to reach remote areas like Porto Moniz’s natural pools or the dramatic cliffs of Cabo Girão. Be prepared for narrow, winding roads, especially in the mountains.

Airports have the largest selection of rental car companies and vehicles, and the most flexible hours. However, renting from local offices can sometimes be cheaper since airport locations add on extra taxes and fees. If you'd prefer to rent a car close to the conference venue, there are a few options in the greater downtown area:

• Hertz has an office 0.8 mi/1.3 km away.
• Avis and Budget have offices 0.8 mi/1.3 km away.
• Enterprise has both Fells Point and Inner Harbor offices (0.5 mi/0.8 km and 0.7 mi/1.1 km away, respectively).

2.2 Public Buses

Nowadays long-distance buses are operated by SIGA. However you may find references of previous companies such as Rodoeste and SAM that connect Funchal with towns and villages across the island, such as Santana, Câmara de Lobos, and Ponta do Sol. While affordable, routes can be time-consuming. Check schedules in advance; routes to remote areas may run infrequently.

2.3 Guided Tours and Shuttles

For a stress-free experience, consider joining a guided tour or using shuttle services to visit Madeira’s highlights, including the Laurissilva Forest, Pico do Arieiro, and the levada trails. Some remote areas of Madeira are not easily accessible by public transport. Renting a car or booking a tour is ideal for these locations.

2.4 Taxis

Taxis are widely available across the island and can be used for both local trips and full-day excursions. Taxis operate on a metered system for short trips within Funchal, however for longer trips or day tours, try to negotiate a flat rate with the driver in advance.

2.5 Visiting Porto Santo

The nearby island of Porto Santo, known for its golden sandy beaches, can be reached by ferry or plane. The island can be visited as a day trip, but staying overnight allows more time to relax and explore. The Porto Santo Line ferry operates bi-weekly trips, with a scenic journey lasting about 2.5 hours. Alternatively, flights from Madeira’s airport take just 15 minutes, providing a quick way to enjoy this serene island. Airlines like TAP and Binter operate these short domestic flights.

Once there, you can explore Porto Santo on foot, by bike, or with rental cars and scooters. The sandy beach, Christopher Columbus House Museum, and Pico Ana Ferreira’s unique rock formations are some of the key attraction once you are there.

Parking

If you’re driving, parking is limited in central Funchal and at some popular attractions. Use public parking garages when possible.

The conference venue provides an attendee parking from XXX€ a day. Beware that parking in close proximity of the venue is limited to parking meters. The nearest public parking garage is at Monumental Parking, just 350 meters beyond the venue.

Additional parking options include Jardins D'Ajuda and Forum Madeira parking lots, both approximately 1 km past the venue. Other parking facilities are available further away, though they may require navigating elevation changes on foot.
