We regret to announce that the 11th International Conference on Marine Bioinvasions (ICMB) must once again be postponed. Ongoing developments in the global COVID-19 pandemic have made it impossible to move forward with our plans for an in-person conference in the spring of 2022, since recent restrictions and disruptions will reduce both participation and access, undermining the purpose of the meeting.
We are now working to identify new dates for ICMB XI in 2023, when we hope people can travel more reliably and safely to attend the conference. We still plan to convene in Annapolis, Maryland, USA, and will be announcing the new dates soon.
This is disappointing news, but we continue to believe that the heart of ICMB is an experience of rich intellectual exchange and collegial interaction that depends on a fully in-person setting. We are committed to continuing this tradition and we hope you will join us in Annapolis, Maryland, USA in 2023.
We recognize that the unprecedented gap since the last conference (in 2018) falls especially hard on students and early career scientists, who have missed key opportunities to connect with professional communities. The Society for the Study of Marine Bioinvasions is now developing plans to convene some new virtual symposia in 2022 and 2023 that focus on emerging topics in marine bioinvasions research, policy, and management. While not a replacement for ICMB, we hope these smaller events will help spark productive new connections and provide an additional opportunity — especially for students and early career scientists — to showcase their work and engage our community.
